I wanted to improve my food security, stop driving to the supermarket daily, and save money so I decided to get my friends & neighbors to help me set up & collectively manage an indoor year round greenhouse. We started growing our own organic, gmo free vegetables. It was amazingly simple and inexpensive. Check it out…

Nice work everyone! Tomato village is rockin’! How are those green onions?
Everything is doing great! The garden is growing so fast it is amazing!
Wow! How inspiring!
Did you say off the grid? I thought I saw lights, no?
I have been wanting to grow veggies indoors now for a long time, but always assumed that I would have to invest in grow lights! How much was the total investment for the set up?
Warmly,
Sherry
Glad you like!! The garden is amazing. I need to film again as it gets bigger everyday. I had a cucumber yesterday that was 6 inches long and last week it was only 1. It tasted like fruit. I was blown away by how tasty it was. Wow!!
So yes the “off the grid” comment needs clarifying. Thank you. What I meant by that is that we are not buying food or seed or soil from the mainstream channels anymore and are now “off the food grid” from a food security perspective. Phase 2 is to add solar panels and rainwater collection so that we are truly 100% self sufficient. We hope to be there by summer 2011.
In terms of costs we are around $ 2,000 so far but keep in mind that we are aiming to support 6 people with the harvest so it can be done for less for sure. The Urban Eatin Gardeners Co-op would be happy to do an assessment for you for your needs, goals and budget http://www.urbaneatin.com/.
Please keep us in the loop if you go down this path.
Brings tears to my eyes dude! Can’t wait to see it Monday. Do we get to sample? You could give eating tours when it gets big enough…
Glad you like ! You were a big inspiration to me when I started to conceive the indoor garden concept. So yes lets make a salad from the garden !!
It’s too ba grocery stores and restaurants don’t grow their own fruits and vegs. Along with everyone having their own mini gardens think of all the gas and money etc you will save over time ! Not to mention the stress on farmers land ( less need for expansion)
that would be so great if every grocery and restaurant had a garden and if downtown roof tops had gardens. we could feed everyone and stop GHG emissions. imagine ..
